Description
Position Summary: Performs various chemical tests and analyses on sludge and wastewater samples, and analytically determines the presence, extent and nature of pollutants and other substances. Determines sampling methods and the types of tests used for water and wastewater analysis. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures. Maintains test results which are used by other PVSC personnel for regulatory, monitoring, enforcement and treatment purposes. Conducts research projects directed towards the solution of specific problems and trains department staff in analytical techniques.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is desired. A degree in chemical engineering, biology or environmental science may be accepted if experience qualifications are met. Experience in instrumental analyses is essential.
Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in a wastewater, industrial or environmental laboratory. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in CVAA & Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instrumental analysis is preferred.
Requirements: Knowledge of chemical principles, theories and techniques, as well as knowledge of the practical and common methods and procedures for laboratory analyses. Fluent knowledge in the use of analytical instruments, including, but not limited to, atomic absorption, spectrophotometers, Ion Chromatography (IC) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) used in performing varied analytical procedures. Knowledge with using a LIMS system for data entry and consumables mgmt. Must be organized, able to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to changing work priorities in a busy, service-oriented environment. Must be able to develop effective work methods, demonstrate proficiency in data entry work, prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, and establish and maintain records. Must be able to review results of laboratory tests and make recommendations, as well as recommend supplies, chemical apparatus and equipment for purchase. Must be able to troubleshoot and perform assigned instrument maintenance. Knowledge of hazardous waste handling and disposal is necessary. Must be able to take an active role in training laboratory staff and in upgrading laboratory facilities and/or instrumentation. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and carry out verbal and written directions. A valid NJ Driver’s License is required.
Physical Demands: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. To perform the essential functions of this position, the employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb, kneel, squat, reach, lift up to 40lbs, carry, push and pull. Must have manual dexterity and the ability to use a keyboard.
Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and may be required to work indoors and outdoors. Work shifts vary and involve a rotating weekend and holiday work schedule. Overtime may be required. Will work as part of a team in surroundings that are kept clean, well-lit and temperature controlled.
The expected base pay range for this position is $112,126 to $144,144. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
