The
City of Anaheim Public Utilities Department seeks a dynamic, customer-service driven, and team-oriented
Apprentice Water Production Technician. The apprenticeship is the entry level classification into the job series in which incumbents acquire journey-level Water Production Technician skills through on-the-job training and supplementary education while in the apprenticeship program.
Candidates are required to obtain a valid Class A California Driver’s license with Tank and Hazardous Materials Endorsement from the Department of Motor Vehicles within twelve months after entering the Apprenticeship Program. Also, candidates must obtain their Water Treatment Operator Grade II Certificate and Water Distribution Operator Grade II Certificate from the State Water Resources Control Board are required by completion of Apprenticeship Program.
The duration of the apprenticeship program is up to three (3) years and requires participation in education/training outside of normal business hours. Please note the apprenticeship has a probationary period of three (3) years.
To promote from an Apprenticeship Water Production Technician to a Water Production Technician. You will be required to pass a written and practical test; along with an exit oral interview.
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Step 1 – One Year - Under close supervision, drive and maintain a truck, lubricate pumps, take well soundings and maintain low voltage (480V) electric well sites, reservoirs, pump stations and vaults; take recording device readings; install, maintain and operate deep well booster pumps, pressure regulators, switch gear, chlorine equipment and recording devices. Learn to operate and maintain equipment used in construction and maintenance of water production facilities. Deliver sodium hypochlorite to various well sites.
Step 2 – One Year - Under close to moderate supervision, install, maintain and operate pressure regulator valves, deep well booster pumps, electric low voltage (480V) switch gear, chlorinators, filtration and water treatment equipment used in water production facilities.
Step 3 – One Year - Under moderate supervision, repair, overhaul and maintain deep well booster pumps, pressure regulators, recording devices and other equipment without limitations. Answer minor trouble calls without supervision.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:
Knowledge of: Concepts of the water production trade and principles of electricity.
Ability to: Learn the Water Production Technician trade; communicate effectively and follow instructions; use common hand and mechanical tools; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and willingness to adhere to the provisions of the Apprentice Agreement to include attending weekend and evening classes and related courses as outlined in the Apprentice Agreement.
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s license with Tank and Hazardous Materials Endorsement from the Department of Motor Vehicles within twelve months after entering the Apprenticeship Program. Possession of a Water Treatment Operator Grade II Certificate and Water Distribution Operator Grade II Certificate from the State Water Resources Control Board are required by completion of Apprenticeship Program.

Environmental Conditions: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents will be required to work around and tolerate chlorine and other associated chemicals used in water treatment; and work with low voltage (480V) electricity and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Physical Conditions: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must have the physical ability to use both hands, arms and legs, stoop, bend and lift up to 100 pounds.
