DEFINITION: Under supervision, learns to perform and performs skilled and semi-skilled mechanical repair tasks and duties associated with the operation, maintenance, and repair of IWA water pumping and treatment plant facilities; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: IWA Water Treatment Plant Operator IThis is an entry level classification in the Water Treatment Plant Operator series. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework, where there are minimal consequences of error, including a wide variety of routine mechanical maintenance work. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is alternatively staffed with Water Treatment Plant Operator II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience, obtaining required certifications, and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.IWA Water Treatment Plant Operator II This is a journey level classification in the Water Treatment Plant Operator series. This position is responsible for performing the full range of maintenance and repair tasks. This class is distinguished from the next higher classification of IWA Senior Water Treatment Plant Operator in that the latter is the advanced journey/lead class and may lead the work of Water Treatment Plant Operators I/II.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, automatic control equipment; water systems; basic pump operating theory; equipment capabilities, limitations, and safe operating characteristics; general building/grounds maintenance and repair practices; modern office procedures, practices, methods, and equipment, including a computer and applicable software; methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation; proper English, spelling, and grammar; occupational hazards and standard safety practices.Skill to: Safely and effectively operate a variety of diagnostic equipment and power and hand tools used in equipment repair; determine water flow needs by use of water flow charts and records; operate modern office equipment including computers and applications related to the work, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.Ability to: Diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work; repair and overhaul pumps, motors, and automatic control equipment related components with minimum supervision; understand and follow oral and written directions; monitor SCADA system and interpret the data; prepare simple records, such as completing work orders; estimate time and materials needed for work; read and understand repair manuals and schematics; interpret, explain, and apply applicable laws, codes, and regulations; read, interpret, and record data accurately; organize, prioritize, and follow-up on work assignments; work independently and as part of a team; make sound decisions within established guidelines; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
