Depending on qualifications, experience and/or certifications, selected applicant will be placed as an Operator I, II or III.
Starting wage for this position is DOQ
Full Ranges For Each Position Are As Follows
Water Plant Operator I: $21.20 HRLY - $29.25 HRLY
Water Plant Operator II: $23.38 HRLY - $32.25 HRLY
Water Plant Operator III: $25.77 HRLY - $35.56 HRLY

Summary Of Classification
The Water Plant Operator I is a trainee position that assists the primary shift operator in the production of potable water. Under the supervision of a licensed operator, the trainee will perform various assigned duties that relate to the proper operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant facility and any other location maintained by the water plant personnel. There is no direct budgetary responsibility associated with this position. Punctuality and attendance is necessary.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Include But Are Not Limited To
- Learn routine water quality analysis for each stage of the treatment process and accurately records data on routine forms
- Confirms that process chemicals are feeding accurately to ensure proper treatment and compliance with State standards
- Ensures compliance of all safety protocol
- Performs routine preventative maintenance on plant equipment such as, greasing
- Monitors filter performance and performs routine backwashing
- Communicates clearly and professionally with city employees and the public
- Performs general custodial and lawn care duties
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures and weather. Employee must possess the physical ability to safely: bend, stoop, lift, climb stairs and ladders, or work in confined spaces. Employee may be exposed to elevated noise levels working around machinery. Employee will be trained to work with potentially hazardous process and laboratory chemicals.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Reading and writing skills sufficient for accurate communication and transference of information—must be able to follow verbal and written instructions
- Math skills sufficient for calculations associated with the water treatment industry—ability to use a calculator and/or computer for complicated equations
- Ability to learn computer programs used by plant staff in daily operations, including the SCADA system
- Skilled in the use of hand tools. Ability to work with a variety of mechanical devices such as, pumps and motors, lawn care equipment such as, mowers and weed eaters
- Ability to work productively under minimal supervision
Minimum Education, Experience And Certification
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Texas Driver's License. Must receive a Class D Surface Water Treatment Operator License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within first year of employment and Class C Surface Water Treatment Operator License prior to the completion of the second year of employment.
Supplemental Skills (Not Required, But Useful To The Position)
Pump and motor repair, ability to use heavy equipment such as backhoe and Bobcat, welding, and electrical experience.

Additional Information
Prefer minimum of 2 years' experience working in water treatment or a related field but experience is not required.
Wage range specified encompasses salary ranges of Water Plant Operator I - III with final wage determined based on experience and certifications of the selected candidate.
