SummaryThe City of Lancaster is seeking dependable and safety focused Heavy Equipment Operator I candidates to join our Public Works team. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies within either the Streets Division or Storm Water Division.
Depending on assignment, this position performs skilled field work involving the operation of heavy equipment to maintain and repair City streets, drainage systems, rights of way, culverts, ditches, channels, easements, and other public infrastructure.
The Heavy Equipment Operator I works as part of a Public Works crew performing roadway repairs, drainage maintenance, concrete work, vegetation removal, hauling materials, job-site cleanup, and other projects throughout the City. The position may also serve as Crew Leader in the absence of the Heavy Equipment Operator II.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Serves as Crew Leader in the absence of the Heavy Equipment Operator II.
- Operates heavy equipment to clean and maintain drainage pipes, ditches, channels, easements, flumes, areas beneath bridges, creeks, roadways, and rights-of-way.
- Trims trees, bushes, and other vegetation to maintain proper drainage and access within City-owned rights-of-way and drainage structures.
- Performs and assists with street and roadway maintenance projects, including asphalt and concrete repairs.
- Hauls excavated dirt, rock, concrete, debris, and other materials as required.
- Performs concrete work associated with the repair, maintenance, and replacement of drainage headwalls, flumes, spillways, culverts, and approach and departure slabs.
- Assists with establishing traffic control and maintaining safe work zones when required.
- Uses heavy equipment, hand tools, shovels, rakes, and other equipment to perform assigned work and clean job sites following project completion.
- Safely operates City vehicles, machinery, and equipment for approved work-related purposes.
- Works collaboratively with Streets, Storm Water, and other Public Works crews to complete assignments and special projects.
- Maintains and observes applicable safety and health standards.
- Provides courteous and professional service when interacting with residents, employees, and other members of the public.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no regular supervisory responsibilities; however, the employee may serve as Crew Leader in the absence of the Heavy Equipment Operator II.
Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate; or one to three years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The successful candidate should be able to:
- Safely operate heavy equipment, vehicles, machinery, and hand tools.
- Read and understand basic instructions, correspondence, and work-related information.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, residents, and other City employees.
- Perform basic mathematical calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Work effectively as part of a field crew.
- Exercise sound judgment and identify potential problems or safety concerns.
- Work outdoors in changing weather and environmental conditions.
- Perform physically demanding work associated with street and drainage maintenance.
The position regularly requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Employees regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsA valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be obtain within one year of your employment.
