The Supervisor of Drinking Water Laboratory plays a pertinent role in the Laboratory Operations. This role is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of Water laboratory, streamlining effective workflows, and directing Water laboratory staff through successful completion of its’ work. Additionally, the incumbent will participate in laboratory processes functions, leading ongoing reporting requirements, and supporting the maintenance of quality controls efforts. This individual will work, in partnership with Laboratory Manager, Quality Lead, and Senior Laboratory Technician(s), to meet internal quality assurance standards, ensure accreditation and regulation requirements, and assist with government and state reporting.
Essential Functions
- In conjunction with Senior Laboratory Technicians, lead the final report transmission process from the lab to the client
- Ensure proper delivery of all required documents and reports to state agencies as required. Assist with daily laboratory activities including sample analysis, entering, and submitting data from samples, and cleaning of laboratory and work area
- Review records for technical content, data accuracy, appropriate regulatory, protocol, and SOP compliance
- Assist in the coordination of the use of laboratory facilities; assure the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment
- Order, receive and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories and assure adequate stock levels
- Supervises staff, assigning work, monitoring activities and evaluating performance
- Establish work schedules and priorities to ensure that the workflow is controlled and meets the needs of the department
- Meet with lab personnel for frequent, informal performance discussions and annual performance appraisals
- Issues daily and monthly reports for all incoming, in-process and finished product analysis results
- Work alongside the Quality Lead to ensure the work procedures mirror SOP, state regulations, turnaround time expectations as set with our clients
- Actively participate in meetings that review quality activities and use the information gained to update quality planning and to suggest corrections to quality problems
- Assist with the training program design of laboratory technicians as required
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of operation, preparation, and maintenance of a laboratory
- Ability to perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations

- Demonstrated ability to define, analyze, research, and communicate issues
- Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks, and to prioritize tasks, in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and advanced Excel skills
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- This job operates primarily in an office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the Water Laboratory, which includes problem solving issues and insuring effective processing
- Recruits, interviews, and selects qualified candidates following established hiring practices and guidelines
- Monitors and verifies the compliance of staff regarding maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable
- In conjunction with HR, performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication
Travel Required
- Local travel on an as needed basis, less than 10%
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with course work in science, chemistry, physics or a related field with four years of laboratory experience or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated progression in leadership and/or areas of responsibility (laboratory environment is preferred)
