Orange County Utilities (OCU) provides water resources and solid waste recovery services to protect and enrich the lives of the citizens and guests of Orange County Florida. The Water Division ensures a safe and reliable water supply for all of Orange County Utilities’ customers. The Water Division operates four regional water supply facilities and eight satellite water supply facilities that collectively produce approximately 60 million gallons per day.
The Water Division is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of
Environmental Coordinator. This position is part of the Quality Assurance/Quality Control team responsible for ensuring the analytical work performed by the Orange County Utilities Central Laboratory meets QA/QC standards. This position will not consist of analytical work at the bench, but rather the review of the laboratory’s analytical work and processes.
Job Description
Representative Duties/ Assignments
Duties may vary based on area of assignment
- Performs a full range of duties characteristic of a modern analytical laboratory.
- Reviews data obtained from analytical testing to ensure accuracy, precision, and consistency. Maintains and verifies accuracy of laboratory records. Inputs and reviews data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Performs internal QA/QC assessments of analytical methods ensuring compliance with the 2016 TNI standards and the original EPA methods or Standard Methods.
- Maintains the Division’s comprehensive quality assurance plan through written updates. Stay well informed of current trends, laws, laboratory functions, literature, changes and improvements in laboratory analytical methods, and environmental regulations. Participate in federal and state audit programs to maintain laboratory certification.
- Provides information, advice and support to scientists and field personnel as needed. May perform other supervisory duties such as planning work of others, training new employees, and compiling reports.
- Presents training sessions on QA/QC topics to laboratory personnel.
- Aids in developing and implementing water quality projects. This may include reviewing improved techniques in testing methods to ensure all QA/QC standards are met. Contribute to problem solving in the laboratory.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Engineering or a closely related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental protection; or an equivalent combination of relevant education or experience.
Preferences
- Environmental Studies
- Laboratory experience
- Chemical Analysis
- Advanced instrumentation experience, including chromatography or mass spectrometry, or experience in a Quality Assurance role in an analytical laboratory, is preferred
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida’s driver’s license
- Prefer candidates with supervisory and/or quality assurance experience.
- Prefer candidates with strong computer skills to include use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Extensive analytical experience in an environmental laboratory performing chemistry, microbiology, and quality assurance.
- Experience in a laboratory certified under the 2016 TNI Standards.
- Experience with QA/QC assessments of the laboratory.
