Job Title: Water Quality Specialist, Fish & Wildlife Department

Location: Kootenai Tribe of Idaho; Bonners Ferry, ID

Reports to: Nutrient Program Division Manager

Duties: The Water Quality Specialist supports the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Fish and Wildlife Department in monitoring and restoring the Tribe’s water resources to sustain fish and wildlife for cultural uses. This position performs field and laboratory work related to tributary and large river nutrient enhancement, assists in the implementation of nutrient addition projects, and provides technical assistance to inform water quality and habitat restoration. This position works closely with tribal, local, state, and federal partners to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and the Tribe’s goals for healthy watersheds.

Physical Demands: Work is performed in an office and outdoors setting in variable weather conditions. It requires standing, walking, bending for extended periods of time and lifting 50 pounds. Fieldwork involves wading in streams, operating motorized boats in a large river, trailering and mechanical skills. Requires visual acuity read instruments, and manual dexterity to operate field and office equipment.

PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Conducts routine and project-based surface and groundwater sampling to assess physical, chemical, biological and food web parameters (e.g., temperature, pH, turbidity, nutrient composition, dissolved oxygen, algae and zooplankton).

· Maintains and calibrates field instruments such as multiparameter sondes, flow meters, nitrate analyzers, dissolved oxygen sensors and chemical dosing stations.

· Implements sampling protocols in compliance with EPA and state guidelines.

· Assists Fish & Wildlife staff to assess water conditions related to nutrient enhancements.

· Compiles technical data and summarizes water quality trends.

· Contributes to habitat restoration projects.

· Communicates with other Tribal programs and local partners on water quality subjects.

· Participates in community outreach and education.

· Safely operates Tribal vehicles, boats, field sampling equipment and farm equipment.

· Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

· Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred; however, experience may apply in lieu of degree.

· Minimum of two (2) years of technical experience in water quality monitoring, environmental assessment, or related work.

· Experience with data management software (Excel, Word).

· Experience with laboratory or field sampling techniques.

· Experience working with Tribal governments preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

· Knowledge of surface water, groundwater and aquatic system processes.

· Familiarity with water quality standards and monitoring procedures.

· Ability to collect and analyze data.

· Strong organization, and communication skills.

· Current Driver’s License and ability to be insured under the Tribal insurance program.

· Must successfully complete a background check.

· Must maintain a drug-free workplace and comply with the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Policy.
