Description
Works as an operator-in-training for the position of Plant Operator; under guidelines of a structured training plan, operates treatment plant on a shift basis, adhering to Decatur Utilities, Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and EPA regulations and safety procedures by performing the following duties.

- Operate and monitor water and/or wastewater treatment equipment in Water Treatment Plant and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant to control flow and processing of water and/or wastewater.
- Monitor SCADA control panels and chemical feed equipment, and adjust pumps, valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate treatment.
- Observe variations in operating and water quality conditions and adjust processes to account for variations.
- Start and stop pumps, engines and generators routinely in proper operation of plants.
- Maintain log of operations and record various instrument readings.
- Regularly inspect and observe pump motors, valves and screens to insure proper working conditions.
- Fill and adjust chemical feeders and oil reservoirs as needed.
- Observe and check automatic chemical feed systems for proper adjustment and/or failures.
- Perform minor preventive maintenance at plant facilities.
- Periodically drain condensation lines and bleed air lines to insure proper operation.
- Collect various samples from various plant units as scheduled for lab testing.
- Assist in or perform routine lab tests as directed. May change chemical feed rate based on lab test or as directed.
- Use a variety of testing equipment such as colorimeter, turbidimeter, pH meter, burrets, test tubes, beakers, gas burners, incubators, etc.
- Operate sludge dewatering building at WWTP.
- Perform regular housekeeping duties in the laboratory and operational areas to maintain clean and neat plant appearance.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- High School diploma or GED.
- Completion of WorkKeys Assessments to include minimum scores in the following skill level descriptions: Applied Mathematics (5), Graphic Literacy (5), and Workplace Documents (6).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks. This includes using software applications for email, word processing, preventive maintenance database tracking and spreadsheet applications and using Internet Explorer to navigate online Employee Self Serve webpage for personal payroll, benefit and employee information. Ability to operate SCADA and interpret data and information related to water and/or wastewater treatment.
- Trainee must pass The Alabama Water or Wastewater Grade IV Certification within 16 months of start date; valid Alabama Driver's License; CPR/First Aid Certification; Customer Service Skills and applicable safety training.
