Job Responsibilities
This employee will be responsible for assisting the Dennis Wildlife Center (DWC) Superintendent in the operation of the Bayless Striped Bass Hatchery and DWC while also assuming leadership and management duties when the Hatchery Manager is unavailable.
Job Duties Include
Assisting the DWC Hatchery Manager with all activities pertaining to fish culture and harvest at DWC and Bayless Hatchery, including: production and distribution of striped bass and hybrid bass fry and fingerlings, American shad fry, and other freshwater fish species as assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator. Assisting with the rearing and tagging of robust redhorse fingerlings and related research regarding the monitoring and movement of stocked robust redhorse.Assisting the Hatchery Manager in administering building and grounds maintenance for:
- DWC office complex
- Bayless Hatchery
- DWC fish rearing ponds
- Ensuring facilities, grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, personal residences and all other associated structures are maintained in a manner that will ensure maximum service, efficiency and aesthetic value.
- Helping to plan and implement research activities at DWC to improve production or stocking efficiency of designated fish species, or to develop culture techniques of new species.
- Assisting the Hatchery Manager with the administration of department records, fish production reports, feed usage records, annual report, requisitions, etc.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A master's degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.
Standard (Core) and Aquatic (Category 5) SC Pesticide Applicator's License within twelve (12) months of hire date. Willingness to acquire First Aid and CPR training.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with striped bass culture and/or warm water aquaculture and fish husbandry. Ability to work independently in the field and in adverse weather; safely operate small boats; collect, enter, and manage data reliably; ability to perform some heavy physical labor. Familiarity with aquatic resource sampling tools (nets, electrofishing gear, water quality meters and test kits). Knowledge of current fisheries techniques; experience with personal computers and mobile devices; Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including formulas and functions in Excel. Ability to swim and be comfortable working in and around water.
