We are currently on the search for a Water Quality Specialist to test and monitor the water quality of the aquariums and pools at the Indianapolis Zoo!

The successful candidate will have a minimum of two (2) years of related work or volunteer experience. A bachelor's degree in a Life Science area or equivalent is required. Water quality testing experience in a zoo or aquarium, either paid or as an intern, is preferred.
This position requires outstanding knowledge of water quality, water quality parameters, filtration equipment, life support systems, and proper use of laboratory equipment and testing procedures. Strong communication skills are needed for this position.
The position requires a highly motivated, self-directed individual who can work both independently and as a team and excels in a lab setting. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position that will include weekends, evenings, and overtime as needed.
Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Has direct responsibility and accountability for the performance of water quality testing, both routine and special case, including bringing any issues to the attention of management.
- Purchases lab supplies and maintains quality and cleanliness of lab.
- Monitors and helps maintain life support equipment associated with chlorine and ozone systems including ORP probes.
- Follows Zoo policies, collection policies and protocols, and biome specific procedures and protocols.
- Trains and directs staff, volunteers, and interns regarding lab protocols as needed per management.
- Obtains and maintains certifications in an CPR, first aid, AED, and oxygen administration.
- Must have a strong understanding of water filtration, and life support systems.
- Will be required to implement fish and invertebrate quarantine procedures as required by the Assistant Curator of Oceans.
- Helps aquarists with overall husbandry of Oceans collection as tasked. This includes but is not limited to preparing diets and feeding, performing daily chats with the public, cleaning holding and exhibit tanks, SCUBA diving to maintain exhibits, and implementing and developing behavioral enrichment.
- Exposure to work indoors, outdoors, and underwater, under all environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
- Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
- Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
- Ability to use department and laboratory specific tools and equipment.
- Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.
- Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens and zoonotic diseases. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.) Supervisor will train on proper use of chemicals.
- Ability to transport and move items, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- SCUBA certification strongly preferred. Will be required to obtain and maintain SCUBA certification within 6 months of hire.
- Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including, scuba gear, dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harnesses.
- Exposure to various solvents, chemicals, and cleaning solutions. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.).
- Must maintain a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire date) and be insurable by the Zoo's insurance.
