Job SummaryWater Production Superintendent - New Position The City of Olathe’s Environmental Services Division wants YOU to join our team of talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water-related services to the City of Olathe’s residents. In 2023, our award-winning water production facility treated 5 billion gallons of drinking water for an average daily demand of over 13.0 million gallons per day. Our team works hard around the clock to make sure we consistently meet or exceed all federal and state drinking water standards so that Olathe customers have safe, high-quality drinking water.
We’ve recently added another Water Production Superintendent position to our team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing water production staff as they work to meet and exceed state and federal regulations for safe, quality drinking water. You'll typically have four (4) direct reports and two (2) indirect reports. A usual day might include collaborating with operations, maintenance, laboratory professionals and the Water Operations Manager, reviewing operations data for water quality compliance, and guiding supervisors or employees through work-related challenges.
Experience in the water treatment industry is a valued asset. Compensation will be based on individual experience.
Pay Range is $75,920 to $98,746.Schedule:2:00 PM to 12:00 AM, Monday through Thursday. The work week begins Monday at 2:00 PM and ends Friday morning at 12:00 AM.

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.The Water Production Superintendent provides highly responsible, professional, technical, and managerial work assisting the Water Production Operations Manager in the overall operations of the City's Water Production section. A significant portion of their time is spent supervising staff responsible for operating and maintaining Water Production facilities. They perform a variety of technical tasks relative to Water Production operations to ensure drinking water is produced in compliance with Federal and State regulations. They also assist with administration of the business functions of the Water Production section.
Key Responsibilities- Assists with directing the overall operation of the City’s water production facilities including water supply wells, water treatment plant, and distribution pumping and storage facilities.
- Supervises, assigns, trains, and evaluates assigned staff; hires, schedules, oversees daily work tasks; develops goals and tracks progress for assigned employees; coaches and mentors; oversees training; evaluates for promotions.
- Administers business functions of the Water Production section; recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; implements policies and procedures; participates in the preparation and administration of the assigned budget; supervises vendor-supplied services and commodities.
- Ensures compliance with all Federal and State regulations and departmental policies and procedures; works cooperatively with outside regulatory agencies; prepares reports for regulatory agencies and maintains operating permits.
- Collaborates with other work groups and City departments on matters relating to the operation and maintenance of water production facilities; analyzes water quality and operational data; troubleshoots water operations and takes corrective actions as required; responds to urgent situations and other emergencies related to water production operations after-hours as needed.
- Determines and implements process changes to improve operational efficiency and/or water quality; provides input on capital improvement projects as it relates to operational matters to promote a future-ready water utility.
QualificationsExperience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in operating water treatment and distribution facilities is required. Experience supervising the work of direct reports is preferred.
Education:A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate degree in environmental technology or a related field is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class IV Water Operator Certification with the State of Kansas is required.
Environmental or Physical Demands:The Water Production Superintendent will perform work inbothindoorandoutdoorenvironments and will be subjectto adverse weather conditions and noise. The work requires routine and frequent sitting, walking, and standing. The position requires the ability to move between multiple locations, often multiple times in a day. Site locations may expose the individual to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, various forms of precipitation, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, pathogenic substances, and other hazards. Some tasks are performed in areas where the ground is uneven and/or water soaked. Job functions in and around excavations, confined spaces, mechanized equipment, roadways, and bodies of water present the need for alertness and safety awareness. The work requires the ability to see, hear, and smell in order to detect problems and ensure the safety of employees and others in response to exposure to the hazards associated with this position.
