The City of Lake Alfred seeks a dedicated and skilled Wastewater Plant Operator to join our team. This position involves responsible work in the operation and maintenance of our Wastewater Treatment Plant equipment and facilities. The ideal candidate will ensure the efficient operation of the plant, conducting tests, maintaining equipment, and responding to emergencies. This role requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Schedule and supervise daily plant operations
- Prepare and submit all regulatory-required reports to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
- Perform regular readings and varied tests on sewage and prepare detailed records and reports
- Monitor and maintain plant equipment, including pumps and lift stations
- Clean and maintain pumps and wet wells; change chlorine cylinders as needed
- Take wastewater flow samples and assist in analyzing solids
- Handle and transport hazardous materials as required, ensuring safety and compliance
- Respond promptly to emergency conditions
- Maintain attendance in the office as required by the department
Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid State of Florida Class “C” Wastewater certificate
- A CDL may be required within six months of appointment, depending on job assignment and location
- Preferred experience in governmental operations
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a valid telephone number
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the necessary skills and abilities will be considered
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of mechanical equipment and machinery functions in wastewater treatment
- Knowledge of sewage treatment processes and basic chemistry
- Familiarity with safety regulations and ability to promote a safe working environment
- Ability to inspect machinery, detect operational flaws, and maintain records accurately
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well with colleagues, city employees, and the public
- Ability to manage scheduling and daily plant operations effectively
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Ability to perform tasks that involve walking, standing, and exerting up to 60 pounds of force regularly
- Exposure to hazardous conditions, noxious chemicals, high noise levels, and adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to work in bright/dim light and perform tasks at elevated levels
