The City of Laguna Beach is seeking motivated, skilled, and dependable individuals to join our Public Works Department as a Wastewater Utility Worker I or II (DOE/DOQ). This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies at either level based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
As a member of the Wastewater Division, you will help maintain and protect the City’s wastewater collection system, lift stations, and related facilities that serve our community. Qualifications
Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Experience
Wastewater Utility Worker I- Two (2) years of general maintenance or repair work. Experience in the repair of municipal sewer system experience is highly desirable.
Wastewater Utility Worker II- Three years (3) years of general maintenance or repair work. Repair of municipal sewer system experience is required.
License/Certificate Requirements
- Due to the performance of field duties that may include the operation of both City commercial and non-commercial vehicles, an applicant must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at time of hire.
- A Class A or B Driver’s License required within 12 months of appointment for Wastewater Utility Worker I and at time of hire for Wastewater Utility Worker II.
- Wastewater Utility Worker II -A California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Grade I Certification Collection System Maintenance is required within 12 months of appointment.

Special Requirements
Positions in this series may receive calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
DOT Compliance
In compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the City's policy on random testing for controlled substances and alcohol for commercially licensed drivers, candidates for this position who are commercially licensed are required to pass a drug test prior to placement in the position. All employees working in this position, who are subject to maintaining a commercial driver's license for the performance of duties, will be enrolled as participants in the City's Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol.
Appointment may be made at either level depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, licenses, certifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position (DOE/DOQ).
This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the same or lower classifications.

Pre-employment Process: Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, and a pre-placement physical including a drug test. Education and employment verification and reference check(s) will also be conducted.
