Description
The Operations Apprentice is responsible for assisting experienced operators in the operation and maintenance of the collection system.
Minimum Requirements
License and/or Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class B required, CDL Class A preferred). If not a current CDL license holder, must obtain a CDL within 1 year of becoming an Operations Apprentice. A C1 Collections Systems License is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in wastewater collection systems.
Education: High school diploma or equivalency certificate required. Satisfactory completion of both the Introduction to Wastewater course and the Advanced Wastewater Collection course is required. Completion of the Advanced Wastewater course is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the conveyance of wastewater, as well as comprehend the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the conveyance of wastewater and combined sewer overflows. Must be knowledgeable of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions involved in the conveyance of wastewater. Mechanical and/or problem-solving aptitude, computer literacy, and the ability to learn and retain technical information are required. Must be able to read, write, communicate and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of the position and execute verbal and written directions. Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body such as climbing (including ladders), kneeling, sitting, standing, working from elevated areas, lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping, handling heavy objects, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, manual dexterity, using a keyboard, and minor use of tools, as well as visual acuity, hearing and speaking. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
The expected base pay range is $59,884 to $91,221. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.

Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
