Applied principles of chemistry and electrochemistry to operate electroplating systems and perform industrial wastewater treatment, including pH control, heavy metal precipitation, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Chemical Treatment and Precipitation: The operator treats wastewater containing harmful materials (e.g., zinc, copper, nickel, chromium) using chemical precipitation, pH adjustment (neutralization), and coagulants to remove metals.
- System Operation: They run both batch treatment and continuous flow systems, ensuring proper chemical dosage and reaction times.
- Filtration and Sludge Management: Operators manage the filter press, which separates solid waste (metal sludge) from the water, and prepare this hazardous byproduct for off-site disposal.
- Lab Testing and Analysis: They regularly collect water samples and perform lab analysis to monitor pH, ORP (oxidation-reduction potential), and heavy metal levels to ensure compliance with, for instance, RCRA regulations and local discharge permits.
- Equipment Maintenance: They maintain, calibrate, and repair machinery, including pneumatic pumps, metering pumps, pH probes, and flow meters.
- Record Keeping: They maintain accurate daily logs of water quality, chemical usage, and flow rates for regulatory reporting.
- Safety Compliance: Operators handle hazardous materials, ensuring a safe work environment by following proper chemical handling, storage, and safety procedures (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Must pass a drug screen and background check
Key Skills
- Chemical/Metal Knowledge: Understanding of pH, acid/base reactions, and metal precipitation.
- Mechanical Skills: Proficiency in maintaining pumps, pipes, and filter systems.
- Troubleshooting: The ability to diagnose and repair equipment issues quickly.
- Environmental Regulation Knowledge: Familiarity with local, state, and federal, such as EPA regulations.

- 2nd (4:00pm-12:00am)
- 3rd (12:00am-8:00am)
