Job Overview: An Engineer works with more experienced engineers to design building Plumbing/Fire Protection systems.
Responsibilities And Duties - System Design: Calculations
- Learns system design calculations including:
- Hydraulic calculations for fire sprinkler standpipe, mains, and branch piping.
- Domestic Water, Sanitary, Waste, Vent, Storm, & Gas pipe sizing calculations.
- Domestic plumbing equipment calculations – booster, sewage & sump pumps, water heaters, air compressors, etc.
- System Design: Drafting
- Works with supervisor to layout fire suppression systems (piping, sprinkler heads, specialty valves, etc.), plumbing piping systems, and equipment utilizing Revit 3D software.
- Produces drawing sets, including but not limited to, drawings notes, details, and single line riser diagrams.
- Selects equipment, such as water heaters and plumbing fixtures.
- Gains understanding of different plumbing and fire protection system types.
- Construction Administration
- Conducts preliminary review of submittals and RFIs.
- Sustainability
- Gains experience working on sustainable projects.
- Gains familiarity with various certifications (LEED, etc.)
- Design Coordination
- Collaborates with fellow Plumbing/Fire Protection engineers within their studio or the firm.
- Asks meaningful questions.
- Client Interface
- Presents self in a professional manner when interacting with external stakeholders.
- Code/References
- Familiarizes themselves with international and local building codes.
- Learns energy codes.
- Gains knowledge of applicable design standard (ASPE, PDI, etc.) handbooks and calculations.
- Additional tasks as requested.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, fire protection or architectural engineering, or similar field.
- Has EIT certification or is working towards it.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Autodesk Revit a plus.
