About the role | Ko te mahi nei
As an Assistant Engineer – Water & Wastewater in the Three Waters Asset Planning Team, you’ll provide technical engineering advice for new water supply and wastewater connections and development infrastructure, ensuring all work aligns with legislation, Council bylaws, servicing policies, infrastructure standards, and network performance requirements.
This is a varied and developmental role, offering hands-on experience across planning, design, assessment, and collaboration with both internal teams and external stakeholders. It’s an ideal opportunity to broaden your professional experience while working toward becoming a Chartered Professional Engineer.

You’ll bring a solid technical foundation, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Required
- A degree-level engineering qualification in civil or natural resources engineering, with a focus on water, wastewater, and engineering hydraulics.
- At least 3 years’ post-qualification experience in water/wastewater engineering or a similar role.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office.
- A full, current New Zealand driver’s licence.
- The ability to apply initiative and sound judgement to solve varied engineering problems.

- Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
- Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $88,003 to $97,781 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
