Join the City of Essex Junction as the Assistant Chief Wastewater Operator and help ensure our essential wastewater systems operate efficiently. In this role, you will handle the daily operations and maintenance of the City’s wastewater treatment facility and pump stations, taking on both routine and advanced technical tasks. This position offers the opportunity to work independently, demonstrate technical expertise, and provide essential support when the Chief Operator is unavailable. Pay and Wages
The pay rate for this role is between $29.45 to $34.00 based on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist in planning, supervising, and coordinating daily wastewater treatment facility operations
- Monitor, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, pipes, tanks, gauges, and electrical systems
- Perform inspections, maintenance, and diagnostic work at pump stations
- Apply advanced knowledge of control systems including SCADA, variable frequency drives, human machine interfaces, heating, and ventilation systems
- Perform and review laboratory testing to ensure daily, weekly, and permit compliance
- Assist the Chief Operator with administrative tasks, reporting, and special projects
- Maintain accurate electronic and paper records related to operations, maintenance, and compliance
- Support construction projects and special initiatives, including ordering materials and supplies
- Assist with building and grounds maintenance such as cleaning, painting, snow removal, and lawn care
- Respond to and assist with operational emergencies
- Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment, confined space protocols, and lock out tag out procedures
- Receive and manage chemical deliveries
- Serve as Acting Chief Operator when the Chief Operator is absent
- Research regulatory updates and technical developments
- Review and update facility operating procedures
- Interpret technical drawings, engineering documents, and operations and maintenance manuals
- Participate in an on call rotation that includes weekend and after hours coverage
Minimum Qualifications
- Vermont State Grade 4 Wastewater Operator Certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire
- Broad technical knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, regulations, and standards
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining and repairing pumps and plumbing systems
- Ability to troubleshoot control systems and electrical components
- Understanding of microbiology and ability to perform laboratory testing
- Strong problem solving skills
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and basic math
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Confined Space Certification
- Ability to reside within 60 minutes of the City of Essex Junction
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED plus 4 years of relevant wastewater experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

- Two or four year college degree or certificate in a relevant field
