Job Summary
The Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator trainee is responsible for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of both drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations. This position performs routine plant inspections, laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, and process adjustments to maintain water quality and meet all regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor water and wastewater treatment plant equipment including pumps, motors, valves, blowers, filters, clarifiers, and control systems.
- Monitor treatment processes to ensure proper operation and regulatory compliance.
- Collect water and wastewater samples and perform routine laboratory tests such as pH, chlorine residual, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and other required analyses.
- Maintain accurate operational logs, laboratory records, and maintenance documentation.
- Adjust treatment processes and chemical feed rates based on laboratory results, flow rates, and operational conditions.
- Conduct routine inspections of plant facilities, equipment, and systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment.
- Assist in troubleshooting operational issues and implementing corrective actions.
- Respond to alarms, equipment malfunctions, and emergency situations as necessary.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with safety procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal drinking water and wastewater regulations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Water and/or Wastewater Operator certification preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
- Basic knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes.
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, control panels, and operational data.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a wastewater treatment facility, including areas with raw sewage exposure.
- Work is performed in both water and wastewater treatment plant environments with exposure to chemicals, mechanical equipment, and varying weather conditions.
- May require rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties depending on operational needs.
Pay: $17.00 - $21.00 per hour
