Overview
This is a treatment plant operator apprenticeship position to provide an opportunity for trainees to gain on-the-job experience and knowledge for successfully achieving licensing/certification in the assigned area of operations. Under general operator supervision, learns to perform skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the reverse osmosis water facility, advanced wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulatory criteria and all safety policies and procedures.
This job works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Responsibilities
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Adjusts chemical feeder injection rates then retests and readjusts until correct results are attained.
- Refills chemical feed tanks and maintains disinfection system.
- For water treatment assignment operates and monitors wellfield, high service pumping, and concentrate discharge facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations; makes operational adjustments as needed to maintain productivity and compliance AND/OR for wastewater assignment operates and monitors lift stations, collection system, treatment system, outfall, and reclaimed water distribution systems.
- Conducts preventative maintenance.
- Reviews daily technical data and logs.
- Assists operators in troubleshooting system and equipment problems.
- Inspects buildings, systems and equipment for proper condition and safety; takes corrective action as necessary.
- Assists Maintenance Mechanics in general maintenance, installation, replacement and repairs of equipment.
- Tests water in order to calculate chemical feed rates; performs required water analysis; adjusts chemical feed rates; retests treated water to ascertain that the proper chemical balance has been reached.
- Tests for operational parameters and records information, recommends or performs adjustments to process as a result.
- Maintains plant security.
- Performs all related work as assigned.
Qualifications
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Successful completion of testing for Florida DEP Class “C” Water Treatment Plant Operator’s License OR (at City’s discretion) Florida FDEP Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License required within one year of hire.
- No prior experience required but preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Group B
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Pay: $23.25 - $37.19 per hour
