The Town of Carbondale Utility Department is seeking motivated individuals to join our team in a variety of roles supporting water treatment, wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection system operations. This posting may be used to fill Maintenance Worker, Utility Technician, Water Operator I to III, or Wastewater Operator I to III positions.
Individuals who are not Colorado certified professionals and hold no license will receive a pay rate of $30.90.
ABOUT THE WORK
Employees help ensure Carbondale’s drinking water, wastewater treatment, and infrastructure systems operate safely and reliably. Duties vary by level but include maintenance, repairs, plant operations, sampling, SCADA monitoring, field work, meter services, and distribution/collection system tasks.
ENTRY-LEVEL & TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with operation and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities
- Perform routine maintenance of pumps, valves, chemical systems, and SCADA-connected equipment
- Repair and maintain water distribution mains, fire hydrants, valves, and service lines
- Support wastewater collection system work, such as lift station checks, jetting, CCTV inspections, and manhole maintenance
- Read water meters, perform meter replacements, and troubleshoot issues
- Learn to interpret utility maps, plans, and field locates
OPERATOR-LEVEL RESPONSIBILITIES (STATE-LICENSED POSITIONS)
- Operate and monitor Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants in compliance with CDPHE regulations
- Interpret laboratory data, SCADA trends, and process indicators
- Adjust flows, chemical dosing, filtration, aeration, clarification, digestion, and disinfection
- Perform regulatory sampling and reporting
- Troubleshoot advanced mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues
DESIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Mechanical aptitude (pumps, motors, valves, piping)
- Industrial or utility experience in water/wastewater, oil & gas, mining, construction, irrigation, etc.
- Plumbing, pipefitting, welding, fabrication
- Electrical troubleshooting or understanding of controls/SCADA
- Heavy equipment operation (backhoe, mini-excavator, loaders)
- Ability to read maps, plans, and schematics
- Water/Wastewater certifications preferred but not required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Colorado Driver’s License
- Ability to perform physical outdoor work
- Must pass physical, background check, integrity test, and drug screen

WORK SCHEDULE
- Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Rotating on-call assignments with overtime pay
- Occasional weekend duties based on operator level
