Position Description
The Water Resources Intern assists the Engineering Department with implementing a variety of water resource projects informed by the Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP), Wellhead Protection Plan (WHPP), Climate Action Plan (CAP), Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP), and helps facilitate projects that plan, manage, protect and maintain flood protection conveyance and water quality treatment infrastructure and the services they provide.
Work is primarily in an office setting with some field work that requires working outside, in variable weather conditions, standing for long period of time and lifting up to 50 pounds.
This position will work up to 40 hours per week from June through August.
Note: The wage listed reflect 2025 figures. These are subject to change pending final budget approval in December.
Essential Functions
- Assist with researching and writing assignments related to stormwater management and pollution prevention.
- Communicate with stakeholders through various channels.
- Assist with stormwater infrastructure inspections and coordinating maintenance activities.
- Assist with fisheries management activities.
- Assist with stream assessments and weekly lake observations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A collegiate student or recent graduate with coursework in Natural Resources or Water Management, Natural Resources Planning and/or Policy, Biological Sciences, Biosystems, Hydrology, Geology, Geography and Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent.
- Proficient in personal computer software including MS Office.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working and incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of water resource management including groundwater, public water supply, surface water, flood conveyance, and surface water quality treatment.
- Interest or experience with ESRI ArcGIS
- Interest in or experience with public participation and stakeholder engagement.
- Interest in or experience with municipal public works projects and operations.
- Interest in or experience with environmental permitting and regulation.
- Interest in or experience with water and natural resources planning and policy.
