Job Responsibilities
Individual will assist in capturing and sampling diadromous fishes, particularly Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon in the Santee-Cooper System. This will involve year-round time in small boats, often in inclement weather. Duties will include, but are not limited to, setting nets to collect sturgeon, collecting water quality information, safely operating small boats, accurately recording data, and maintaining project equipment (nets, boats, motors, trailers, YSI meters, etc.). Individual will also assist in telemetry activities such as downloading acoustic receivers and maintaining receiver array throughout the Santee-Cooper System. Individual may also be expected to assist other projects within the diadromous section sampling American eel, American shad, and herring. Work may include unusual hours, some weekends, and field sampling out of town.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to identify marine and riverine fishes, utilize computers and microscopes, collate biological and water quality data, and lift heavy equipment and specimens. These abilities would normally be acquired through college education with a degree in marine biology or related field and/or work experience. Applicant must be able to swim, and demonstrate that they have small boat experience. Ability to record data legibly.
