Job Responsibilities
Individual will be required to collect and collate data concerning the biology of fishes, especially shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon. Individual will assist lead biologist in providing day-to-day management of Santee Cooper FERC related activities, supervision of project personnel, and oversight of logistical arrangements for all field work. This will involve extensive time in small boats (year-round and often in inclement weather) setting gill and/or trammel nets, handling endangered species, downloading receivers, taking and analyzing water quality data. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint required. Other duties include, but are not limited to, report writing, analyzing and proofing program data, and other tasks essential to the functionality of the project. Work will include unusual hours, and possible weekends.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong boating skills and experience, as well as a boater safety course certification. Knowledge of South Carolina's fish, wildlife, and marine species, including their habits, habitats and natural requirements. Ability to direct fish, wildlife or marine resources management or research projects. Ability to direct subordinate personnel engaged in wildlife management or research projects. Ability to utilize computers and microscopes; collate biological, telemetry, and water quality data; and record data legibly. These abilities would normally be acquired through college education with a degree in marine biology or related field and/or work experience. Applicant should be a competent swimmer and comfortable in and around water under all varieties of weather conditions. Applicant must have the ability to lift heavy objects including pulling heavy nets, gear, and equipment, and lifting large animals regularly.
