AMHERST Water Resources Technicina - Waste Water (Laboratory Technician
l) Performs a variety of monitoring, sampling, and laboratory analyses
pursuant to the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
(MassDEP). Tasks are generally related to compliance monitoring of
water, sewer, landfill, drainage and other regulated activities of the
Town. MAJOR DUTIES: Performs a variety of monitoring, sampling, and
laboratory analyses pursuant to the requirements of the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (MassDEP). Collects samples and performs
laboratory analyses, including microscopic analysis, of water, waste
water, landfill, and other DPW related materials. Monitors compliance
with EPA and MassDEP regulations. Maintains tests result records, enters
data, and maintains databases; Prepares reports. Operates, calibrates,
cleans, and laboratory instruments and equipment, including on-line
instrumentation. Cleans and maintains laboratory, orders supplies for
laboratory and maintains proper inventory. Works with Division Directors
and Division Supervisors on treatment plant process control, including
quality assurance and quality control. Performs other, related duties as
assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associates Degree in environmental
science, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, or other related
subject PLUS one (1) to (three (3) years of related experience; OR a
combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability
to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. Valid
Massachusetts Driver?s license. Ability to work on own initiative and to
maintain proper testing and sampling procedures. Demonstrated ability to
organize records and interpret data. Ability to establish and maintain
effective relationships with associates, contractors, vendors, and the
public. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of water and wastewater
treatment processes and applicable regulations as they relate to
chemical, physical and bacteriological water quality requirements.
Knowledge of pertinent local, state and federal regulations and
requirements for the operation of laboratories, and water, wastewater,
and landfill facilities. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to successfully
pass pre-employment physical and drug test. Ability to successfully pass
a CORI background check and driver?s license check. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works
in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near
moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places
and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of
electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to
