Position Function
Internship to assist with the City’s surface water programs and stormwater infrastructure verification project.
Tasks/Duties
- Collect surface water samples for water quality parameter testing.
- Learn invasive plant identification and assist with applying integrated plant management techniques for the City’s lakes.
- Compare record drawings to existing information in the City’s GIS Stormwater layer for accuracy of stormwater infrastructure.
- Field verify stormwater infrastructure as necessary in cases of conflict and/or missing information.
- Coordinate with Public Works Administrative and GIS staff to reflect updates to GIS mapping.
- Identify deficiencies during field verification visits and communicate them to City staff for any necessary corrections and/or maintenance.
- Review record drawings as part of field verification.
- Assist with evaluation of commercial property stormwater systems comparing field observations with record drawings.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED is required for this role
- Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in civil and/environmental engineering, biology/limnology or geographical information systems.
- Ability to perform field observation and data collection in various weather conditions.
- Must be detailed oriented and have excellent communication skills.
- Valid driver license. Must obtain State of Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.
Preferable Qualifications
- Familiarity with ESRI systems and professional version of Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam.
- Knowledge of the different elements of stormwater systems and infrastructure.
- Willing to work minimum 20 hours per week; willing to consider extension of internship, if the opportunity becomes available.
- Comfortable in and around bodies of water and on marine vessel.
Supplemental Information
Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement and a criminal background screening.
Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).
