Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Assistant Director of Engineering plays a vital leadership role in managing the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of critical Town infrastructure, including transportation, water, stormwater, and public facilities. You'll oversee engineering staff, consultants, contractors, and multiple complex projects while ensuring regulatory compliance, technical excellence, and budgetary accountability.
What You'll Do:
- Supervise and mentor engineering staff; oversee performance, workflows, and development.
- Plan and manage capital infrastructure projects—from conception through construction.
- Prepare and review engineering designs and specifications (utilities, stormwater, roadways, etc.).
- Serve as the technical liaison for internal departments, developers, and the public.
- Oversee contracts, RFPs, and procurement processes in accordance with Virginia regulations.
- Conduct site inspections and monitor construction progress for quality, budget, and schedule.
- Ensure compliance with VDOT, DEQ, VDH, and other regulatory agencies.
- Participate in budget planning and monitor project expenditures.
- Champion innovation and sustainability in municipal infrastructure development.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in civil engineering, construction, or project management.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia preferred.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license and insurability under Town requirements.
- VDOT Locally Administered Projects (LAP) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
