Position Summary
The Water Services Worker 2 leads a water maintenance crew and operates heavy equipment in connection with the installation and repair of water mains and new services. May require independent judgment in the disposition of routine matters without direct supervision. Will work under the direct supervision of the Water Superintendent.
Requirements, Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Provides support for the department. In addition to other duties as assigned, will operate heavy equipment in connection with the installation and repair of water mains and water services. Will be responsible for operating a backhoe and various pieces of excavation equipment as well as maintaining equipment.
- Repairs broken water mains and/or service connections.
- Install new water services in a timely manner.
- Drives a dump truck with trailer.
- Excavates ditches with a backhoe with the assistance of a Water Service Worker 1.
- Excavates around utility cables in locating water mains.
- Taps water mains for new services and main tie-ins.
- Backfills ditches and repairs streets and yards.
- Assists in flushing, locating water lines, and valves.
- Conducts complaint investigations and troubleshoot issues.
- Participates in a “standby” rotation, being on standby for a week at a time, typically once every 5 to 6 weeks.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises one employee in the water services department. (Distinguishing feature between this class and Water Service Worker 1 is that this class operates the heavy equipment requiring a higher degree of skill.). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities)
- Must have a one-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to obtain and/or maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A within 6 months.
- Ability to obtain and/or maintain a Distribution Grade 3 Water Operator License.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Greater than 50 pounds may require a team lift. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Specific required movements include the following: trunk-bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, and carry, arm’s reach, and leg-lifts. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
