Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, buildings and equipment at a wastewater treatment plant and/or pumping station:and performs other related duties as required.

This class is distinguished by its responsibility for the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and upkeep of grounds, buildings and equipment at a wastewater treatment plant and/or pumping station.
Examples of Duties

Operates power, passenger and tractor type of mowers or equipment of comparable complexity to mow lawns, move small loads, etc.; maintains equipment by servicing, adjusting, removing and installing accessories; trims grass and weeds along walks, driveways, tanks, buildings, and planted areas; waters and fertilizes lawns and plants; prunes trees, shrubs and hedges; sprays plants and flowers with insecticides; rakes leaves and grass; transplants and cultivates plants, flowers and shrubs; assists in removing and pulverizing dried sludge; assists in cleaning and maintaining sludge processing equipment, tanks, digesters and chlorinators; assists in the maintenance and repair work on treatment plant and pump station equipment and in the installation, repair and replacement of water lines and sprinkler heads for lawn sprinkling systems; assists in painting buildings and equipment; assists in building maintenance work; opens and closes valves as instructed; performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning windows, bathrooms, floors and walls; operates motor vehicles as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: (1) A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of mechanical work experience.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3) or CDL; and a State of Hawaii Medical Examiner's Certificate, as applicable, prior to completion of probation.
Knowledge of: tools, materials and practices used in grounds keeping and custodial work; basic mechanic hand tools and their uses; servicing requirements of mechanical equipment.
Ability to: learn general custodial and maintenance work at wastewater treatment plants; learn to operate and maintain power, passenger and tractor type mowers; use common hand and garden tools; work under unpleasant, obnoxious conditions; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work harmoniously with others; handle weights and loads.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for the performance of the duties.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
