Environmental Specialist I
It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The
Environmental Specialist I will support hydrogeological investigations and studies to assess groundwater quality statewide. These investigations monitor groundwater, assist in understanding groundwater effects on surface water, aid in understanding environmental impacts on groundwater as well as agricultural impacts on groundwater that may be used for drinking water.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect groundwater quality samples throughout the statewide monitoring well network. This includes but is not limited to planning and preparation for field sampling, sample collection, sample delivery, and assisting with well redevelopment and maintenance.
- Analysis of Groundwater Resources Branch databases, as well as federal and other state databases to increase efficiency and quality control of sampling events.
- Review and update SOPs (standard operating procedures) and other supporting guidance materials as needed.
- Update and/or develop standardized data cleaning and formatting procedures; assist with integrating data into DWR databases and making data publicly available.
- Conduct geospatial analysis of groundwater quality data. Develop GIS datasets and other GIS products.

The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolina’s drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. The Groundwater Resource Branch within the Water Planning Section of DWR is responsible for measuring, protecting, and preserving the high quality of North Carolina's groundwater resources. This is accomplished by maintaining a statewide network of groundwater monitoring wells, implementing permitting and compliance programs for installation of certain types of wells, and overseeing site assessment and groundwater corrective action at DWR permitted facilities with groundwater impacts.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource
sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Graduating Senior students with applicable degrees listed above with an anticipated graduation date will be considered. Job offers will be contingent upon completion of their degree.
