Description
This is a non-exempt position, which is technical laboratory work performing physical, chemical and biological examination of natural and potable water, domestic and industrial wastewater, air quality, and related samples under the direction of the Environmental Analyst II.
An employee in this classification is responsible for performing physical tests, chemical analyses, and biological examination in accordance with standard professional procedures, to obtaining the data required for process control and plant efficiency determinations. The employee is required to use independent judgment in performing tests or analyses and collecting and maintaining scientific data under varying conditions. Under supervision and with experience and training, employee may be required to perform more complex tests and procedures using specialized laboratory instrumentation. Work is subject to review by the Environmental Analyst II through reported results obtained and by observing overall performance of laboratory activities.
This employee must act as the "Quality Assurance Officer" in accordance with NELAC [National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference] Standards and Requirements and as the "Deputy Technical Director" when the Lab Director is absent.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Examples of Duties
Assists Environmental Analyst II in all analyses as required and as directed.
Performs specific chemical and/or biological tests resulting in data for plant process control.
Performs specific chemical and/or biological tests resulting in data indicating plant efficiency for regulatory agency reporting.
Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
Maintains records of tabulated test results.
Prepares daily and monthly reports of plant operating data.
Maintains general cleanliness of laboratory and equipment.
Responsible for coordination of field projects, as necessary.
This position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of chemistry and biology.
Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of water and wastewater treatment.
Ability to learn the operation and care of specialized laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of the basic principles, practices and requirements of NELAC and other best practices as may be adopted within the industry.
Ability to set up and maintain a schedule of laboratory tests of water and wastewater.
Ability to prepare analytical reports and calculate and interpret test results.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental officials, other municipal employees, and the general public.
Ability to operate City vehicle or self-contained mobile laboratory, and possess the required license.
Ability to properly and proficiently operate the La Chette and/or other laboratory "auto azalyzers".
Desirable Experience And Training
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in chemistry or biology.
A minimum of one (1) year work experience in laboratory work, preferably in environmental quality control.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience or training may be considered.
Work Environment
This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
