Additional steps (Step F, Step G, and Step H) included in the salary range listed above are available to employees in this job classification after completion of five years of service (Step F), ten years of service (Step G), and 15 years of service (Step H), and one year at the prior step, and good performance evaluations. Initial salary placement is typically at the entry point of the range unless the candidate has prior Maintenance Worker experience which may warrant initial placement at a higher step.

Opportunity to work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

About The Position

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Worker I position in our Utilities Department. Positions may be filled in the Wastewater or Water Section. From maintaining water lines to supporting emergency repairs, your work will directly impact the daily lives of our residents. For this recruitment, preference will be given to candidates who possess a CWEA Wastewater Collections Grade 1 Certification, Water Distribution Grade I, a Class A driver’s license, experience operating heavy equipment, and/or underground construction or wastewater collection experience.Although the current two vacancies are all in the Wastewater section, this recruitment will also create an eligibility list for future openings in our other sections – Water and possibly the Parks and Landscapes, and Streets/Trees/Stormwater & Drainage teams in Public Works. Interested candidates should apply and get on the eligibility list in the event an opening occurs in the future giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of career paths within public service. Eligibility lists are typically good for one year and may be extended for an additional year.

The Wastewater Section personnel are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the sanitary sewer collection infrastructure to include maintaining lines and connections, completing repairs, and proactively flushing lines to prevent sanitary sewer overflows. The Water Section personnel are responsible for planning, operation, and maintenance of the City’s wells, and water distribution system ensuring a safe and reliable supply of drinking water. The duties also include managing booster pumps, reservoirs, routine system maintenance, water sampling and the monthly reading of all water meters.

Under direct supervision of supervisor, this position performs work in one of the sections as assigned. Employees in this job classification may rotate/transfer between the sections noted above as determined by the City and will be required to fully meet the job requirements, including the obtaining of certifications, when assigned to a specific section for an extended period of time.

About The Department

The goal of the Wastewater and Water Operations teams is to protect public health and enhance the quality of life for those who live, work, and visit the City of Gilroy. This is achieved by operating, maintaining, and preserving the City’s wastewater collection and water distribution systems and conveyance infrastructure through reliable, high-quality services that ensure environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and system sustainability. The Wastewater team is responsible for the day-to-day inspection, maintenance, and repair of wastewater facilities and assets in accordance with state and federal regulations and industry best practices. The Water team ensures safe drinking water through the operation and maintenance of wells, pump stations, reservoirs, pipelines, and hydrants.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL

Have knowledge and related experience in municipal wastewater maintenance including sanitary sewer collection systems, lift stations, manholes, and related infrastructure and/or water distribution system maintenance to include repairs, meter installation, well maintenance, and operation of heavy equipment. Experience in sewer line cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and repair is highly desirable.
Be customer service oriented with the ability to communicate clearly with members of the public.
Have strong record keeping skills with the ability to effectively document work completed in utilities/public works software.
Possess a clean driving record with a commitment to safe driving at all times. A Class A driver’s license at time of hire is preferred.
Have experience operating heavy equipment and specialized wastewater maintenance equipment such combination sewer cleaning trucks, vacuum trucks, CCTV inspection equipment, loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, etc.
Have certifications and training in one or more areas of public works operations such as a Playground Inspection Certification, CWEA Water Collection System Grade I Certification, Qualified/Pesticide Applicator Certification, State CA Grade I Water Distribution and/or Water Treatment Certification, or other similar certifications.
Have knowledge and experience with work zone safety plans and set up.
Be safety oriented and have current knowledge of safety practices related to the work.
Be team-oriented and easy to get along with in a group setting.
Have a solid track record of being reliable and dependable – at work and on time each day.
Show initiative and have a “can do” and “get it right the first time” attitude.
Be high energy and excited to perform assigned work.
Have ability to follow both oral and written instructions.

Qualifications

Minimum twelfth (12th) grade education or G.E.D.
One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience. Prior work for a public agency or other similar service industry preferred, but not required.
Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver License within 12 months of hire/transfer. May be required to obtain endorsements. Must participate in the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing program, which includes submission to random drug and alcohol testing at such time the employee possesses a commercial license permit or a commercial license.
When assigned to the Water Section, will be required to obtain a State of California Grade I Water Distribution Certification within twelve months of hire or transfer.
When assigned to the Parks and Landscape Section, will be required to obtain a Qualified Applicators Certificate with any one Category within twelve months of hire or transfer.
When assigned to the Streets/Trees/Stormwater & Drainage or Wastewater Section, must demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following pieces of equipment within twelve months of hire or transfer: backhoe, Sweeper, or Vactor. A training certificate may be required.
Per the AFSCME MOU, due to stand-by and call out duties, employee assigned to the Water and Streets/Wastewater/Trees Sections must reside within sixty (60) minutes normal driving time of the City Corporation Yard prior to the completion of one year of work. Normal driving time is the most direct route, at the speed limit. Residency within the sixty (60) minute response must be maintained during the course of employment.
May be subject to scheduled 7 day paid standby duty on a rotating basis.
Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis.
Pass an employment background check which includes a Department of Justice criminal record check.
Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
Prefer non-tobacco user.
